How to apply for the Federal Skill Worker Program (1)

We will be discussing the Federal Skilled Worker Program which is the most popular program available for Canada Immigration.

The purpose of applying through the Federal Skill Worker Program is to obtain Permanent Residency in Canada. The FSWP is not a temporary Visa. Whoever gets this is on his/her way to Citizenship. With a PR you will be able to get all benefits of citizens in Canada including free basic and secondary education for your children, Free health care, ability to come and go out of the country as you wish, unrestricted work permit, etc.
The application process from start till you get the PR stamp or Migrant Visa will take anywhere between 6-12 months. That’s because Canada is very careful about who they give their PR status to. That's also why you have to apply by yourself. They will check every single document you submit and scrutinize your personality extensively before they give this stamp. With the Migrant Visa, you become eligible for Canadian Citizenship after 3 years of residing in the country and after meeting some conditions but that’s a story for people who have already secured the PR.

For now, let’s focus on how to secure the PR first.

To evaluate your Certificate (ECA) you are to ask your school to send your transcript to WES (World Education Service). Then you are to send a copy of your actual certificate to WES as well. They will evaluate your transcript and certificate to be sure it’s up to the internationally accepted standard. This process lasts about 7 weeks after which they confirm that they have received both certificates and transcripts. This evaluation costs $220. I will also advise you to send them through a trackable courier service like DHL or FedEx so it gets there quickly and without stories. This will cost between $70 to $90.

Do not send your transcript yourself. Your school should send it on your behalf. You’re not the first from your school doing it so your school will most likely have a system for sending transcripts. Tip the officer in charge if need be so they sort out your document fast.

You are to evaluate your highest degree, for instance, if you have a Master's degree, there’s no need to send your B.Sc or WAEC. It’s not necessary.

If you have a spouse that’s willing to relocate with you, they should have their certificate evaluated as well.

If you studied medicine, law, Pharmacy or Veterinary medicine, please do not use WES to evaluate your certificate. If you use WES, your degrees would be evaluated as BS.c and you will get points for BS.c which is not bad; However, There are specific bodies for your field that will evaluate your certificate as Masters so you get more points.
